Bio

Marjan Anvari is a visual artist and art conservator from Iran. She specializes in tazhib, a form of traditional manuscript illumination that dates back to 224 A.D. Because of its ubiquitous presence in Iran's historical architecture, visual arts, and craftsmanship, tazhib has become a symbol of nationality and culture. Anvari has more than 15 years of experience working on manuscripts, books and art on paper. “Since Iranian historical objects are usually decorated by traditional patterns and designs, Anvari explains, “it has always been my job to repair and retouch the colorful miniatures that illustrate the epic poem books or the illuminations that decorate the margins of old manuscripts.” In 1996, Anvari completed her education in Restoration and Conservation of Relics at the Cultural Heritage Higher Education Center (Iran) and in 1998 started as an art conservator in the Iranian Institute of Contemporary Historical Studies. From 1999-2011, she worked at the Central Library of University of Tehran. In 2012, Anvari moved to Oregon with her son and husband, and had her first painting show in August 2012 at Iranian Festival. With two other Iranian artists, Anvari founded Negahreh Art+ Design in December 2014 to bring traditional Persian arts back into the everyday life. Negahreh held its first exhibition in February 2015 and has since hosted several more for the Iranian community and the general public.
